Top 10 DoE Tips

By Elanna Ktistis

Every year, the school gives students the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, or simply DoE, and this year is no exception! For some students, the idea of spending hours walking outdoors with a heavy backpack might sound exhausting. For others, it sounds like the perfect adventure. Either way, this year’s Duke of Edinburgh expedition is set to be an experience that students won’t forget anytime soon.

Whether you’re preparing for your first DoE expedition or already know what to expect, a little preparation can make a big difference. Here are 10 tips to help you make the most of your DoE experience!

1.Break In Your Boots

New boots might look great, but they won’t feel great after hours of walking. Make sure you wear them before the expedition so you know they are comfortable.

2.Pack Smart

Take what you need, but remember that you’ll have to carry it all. Think carefully about what is actually essential for your trip.

3.Stay Hydrated

Bring plenty of water and remember to drink regularly throughout the day, especially when the weather is warm.

4.Check the Weather

Be prepared for whatever the weather throws at you. Pack suitable clothing and make sure you know what conditions to expect.

5.Pack Some Good Snacks

A well-timed snack can make a surprisingly big difference when you’re tired and still have miles to go!

6.Know Your Map

Don’t rely on just one person to know where you’re going. Make sure the whole team understands the route and knows how to read the map.

7.Stick Together

DoE is a team experience. Look out for each other, communicate and make sure nobody gets left behind.

8.Look After Your Feet

Comfortable socks and suitable footwear are essential when you’re walking for hours. Your feet will thank you!

9.Stay Calm When Things Go Wrong

Getting confused about the route or having problem with your equipment doesn’t mean the expedition is ruined. Stop, think and work it out together.

10.Enjoy It!

Take in the scenery, laugh with your friends and enjoy being away from the classroom. The memories will probably end up being the best part!

At the end of the day, DoE is about more than reaching the campsite or completing the route. It’s about the experience along the way and the new things you can learn!

So, whether you’re excited about the adventure or slightly nervous about the walking, remember to enjoy the experience. You might come back tired, but you’ll hopefully leave with new skills, great memories, and a story or two to tell!
