Galloping Into the Chinese New Year of 2026

By Elanna Ktistis

As January fades, another spectacular celebration begins: Chinese New Year! Also known as the Spring Festival, this year the celebration begins on February 17th 2026, welcoming the energetic and free-spirited Year of the Horse.

But Chinese New Year isn’t just one day… It’s a 15-day celebration filled with traditions, food, family gatherings, and lots (and lots) of red!

What Is Chinese New Year All About?

Chinese New Year is one of the most important traditional holidays in China and many other Asian countries. It marks the beginning of a new year according to the lunar calendar.

Homes are cleaned to sweep away bad luck. Red lanterns hang in streets and windows. Families gather for reunion dinners with symbolic dishes meant to bring prosperity and happiness. And of course, children eagerly wait for red envelopes (hongbao) filled with lucky money.

Firecrackers pop, dragon dances twist through crowds, and everything glows in red — the colour believed to bring good fortune and scare away negative energy.

Why the Horse?

The Horse is the seventh animal in the Chinese Zodiac. According to legend, the Jade Emperor held a great race to determine the order of the zodiac animals. The Horse, known for its speed and strength, claimed seventh place.

People born in the Year of the Horse are often described as: energetic, independent, confident, and adventurous!

The Horse symbolizes freedom, passion, and determination. In 2026, we’re encouraged to chase our goals boldly — but remember not to gallop too fast without thinking things through!
