On the 8th of March every year, we celebrate the victories as well as the obstacles that all women have faced around the world. We remember the women who have stood before us, and uplift women who are in our lives every day, whether it is your mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, bestie or even your teachers and role models! As we all know (if you know your historical facts well enough), it is important for all women to stay united and continue to embolden our liberties, as we still have a long way to go in terms of equality and representation. And yes, to answer the questions of many, women’s rights have evolved, but not to the extent where we are equal to our male counterparts, as women continue to face discrimination in various environments. This is why International Women’s Day is incredibly important, not just for women, but to all members of society who have chosen to support them!
More than just a celebration:
We had the wonderful opportunity to talk with our Politics & Global Citizenship teacher, Ms Elina Stepanyan, about today’s celebration, where we received an insight on how significant this moment is to her:
“I think that it’s a wonderful opportunity for women around the world to come together and support each other and look back at the history of everything women have achieved over the years, such as women’s rights and freedoms. It is important to celebrate that and remember that women should stick together and lift each other up as opposed to falling under the patriarchy, which unfortunately women have been subjected to for many centuries.”
Ways to celebrate… and it is a Saturday too!
It is important to note that celebrating women should occur everyday, whether it is the smallest things in their lives or the unexpected triumphs that they have worked incredibly hard for. Today, especially, highlights these savory moments and aligns with the rest of the women around the globe. To all the beloved women, don’t forget to: hang out with your besties, visit your family and be sure you’re getting the princess treatment from your partner!
