MED HIGH STUDENTS DEBATE WITH STYLE: THE AANMUN CONFERENCE

By Amelia M.

Alert incoming! Med High has arrived at the conference…

Throughout the three thrilling days from November 8th-10th at the American Academy Nicosia, the Year 5 and Year 6 students were given the opportunity to represent our school by debating on a range of interesting topics. Whether it was the constant question of whether nuclear weapons should be disarmed or fully eliminated, or whether greenwashing even exists, given the fact that the economic term is younger than Generation Z.

Committee work and resolution writing—amongst other very productive things

We were allocated to the committee that the AANMUN Staff had chosen to put us: such as the Economic and Social (ECOSOC), Human Rights (UNHRC), and the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (SPECPOL).

When our students were each chosen to represent a variety of countries with differing views, they knew that it was either a game win or game over. In preparation, the students had to prepare a position paper in order to demonstrate their chosen country’s stance on the topic that was discussed in each committee.

Day 1 was filled with icebreakers and mock dates. In SPECPOL’s case it was a never-ending debate on Harris vs. Trump right after the US elections had concluded.

Day 2 was filled with lobbying and resolution writing, either for or against the topic of each committee, and maybe even a series of Just Dance choreos and attempts at blind karaoke. Bear in mind that the delegates of each country had to create an alliance with other delegates that have the most friendly relations with them. So, the chances of an alliance between the USA and China are very unlikely if your resolution wants to be successful and realistic, although illicit affairs are a thing too! During breaks, most students managed to catch up with old friends, alliances and got to know the new people participating from other schools as well. If there’s one place to gain the best social experiences, it’s at MUN conferences.

Day 3 consisted of the plenary session, where the most successful (and controversial) resolutions were presented to all delegates from all committees. Everyone was basically united as one, whether the resolution was favored or accused of being too vague, or the debate time was to craft a whole yapping session. Moral of the story? It was a productive and interesting process.

And the awards go to… Med High!

(Are we even surprised?)

During the closing ceremony, the Secretariat of AANMUN had presented 3 special awards for each committee: the Best Position Paper Award, Honourable Mention and Best Delegate. Many of our students managed to achieve most of these awards from their allocated committees, and we could not be prouder of them. Let’s take a moment to congratulate all of the winners from Med High:

Best Delegate from UNHRC – Naomi from Year 5

Best Delegate from ECOSOC – Dariia from Year 5

Honorable Mention from SPECPOL – Gracie from Year 5

Best Position Paper from SPECPOL – Amelia from Year 6

We are looking forward to our upcoming conferences during this academic year!
