The Mediterranean Model UN Workshop on the 16th of November was such an incredible event! At the English School in Nicosia, our hard working delegates were ready to debate, representing countries such as Nigeria and the United Kingdom in their general assemblies…
Look-alike contest!!
The beloved and exciting gossip box brought about some.. interesting thoughts? The normal comments like “our assembly is the best” and “this delegate is so pretty” were almost entirely overshadowed by comments such as “The delegate of Congo looks like Donald Trump”. Yes, those very words were said. He really did though, he just needs an orange and extremely oversaturated spray tan. It was also discussed by the delegates that the chair of GA4 looked significantly like McLovin from Superbad. To be honest, his black hair, and his nearly identical glasses, resembled him almost ENTIRELY. Maybe it was actually him…
Pineapple on pizza?!
The debates included some vicious arguments during the conferences about some very very significant and interesting topics, such as pineapple on pizza, and if putting it on a delicious pizza is borderline criminal. The delegates were also encouraged to debate more relevant and serious matters, such as abortion measures, which helped them consider and justify what their representative country believes in. This goes to show that there was definitely a unique range of what the delegates were debating, and it also allowed them to get out of their shells and form opinions on such issues. The English School definitely had their hands full when creating their resolutions for this productive and slightly intimidating workshop, where notably General Assembly 4 (GA4) passed the abortion resolution, proving that even the youth can make a difference in society and are willing to make a change for a brighter and better future.
The English School
The English School, which hosted this amazing event, spared no expense on the event where the food, consisting of Zorbas pastries, delicious coffee and drinks from the school itself was on another level. Additionally, the science building had not only a science library and small exhibits but also an ENORMOUS conference room. It was the perfect location to host one of the amazing conferences. However, it seems like they have to choose the most intimidating rooms; like do they want people to debate or be afraid? The theatre as well was arguably one of the scariest rooms to debate in simply because of how quiet it was in the room and how secluded the stage was. The mere thought of standing with those 140 eyes looking at you would bring you enough fear to keep your butt glued to that seat. Nonetheless, the English School put in a commendable amount of effort into ensuring that all the delegates had a productive and enjoyable debate!
Ice Breakers!
Obviously in order to create a more comfortable atmosphere in the conference room, the chairs decided to create some icebreakers to help the delegates get to know one another in a different way. For example, we found out that over half of GA4 got drunk in an intense game of never have I ever, where the shuffle of chairs being sat in echoed through the room as soon as the question was fielded. In other assemblies, the delegates channelled their inner Hollywood actors while performing in front of the other members, where their heart wrenching performances almost brought tears to everyone’s eyes!
It can be seen that this Mediterranean Model UN Workshop definitely laid the groundwork for what is to come in the actual conference in February. Even though a lot of chaos is anticipated, a lot of enjoyment in creating bonds with others will be included along with being able to express opinions on matters that will affect the current and future generations.
